Water Futures is a water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) consultancy based in Sydney, Australia.

Since 2003 Dr Daniel Deere, whose core discipline is environmental microbiology, has provided technical services to health agencies and water and sanitation utilities. His passion is improving public health and water quality utilising nature-based solutions.

Experience

Dr Daniel Deere

Dan has over 30 years of experience as a WASH specialist. For the past 20 years he has been a freelance consultant. Prior to that he was employed in a diverse range of organisations, including academia, engineering consultancy, water and sanitation utilities, government, and a cooperative research centre.

He brings expertise in catchment and source water management, monitoring, biological wastewater treatment, environmental microbiology, and process and water quality management. Dan typically works collaboratively as part of cross-sectoral multi-discipline teams, including water utilities and industry, regulators, researchers, modellers, and community organisations.

  • Systematic review of scientific evidence and provision of recommendations.

  • Management and coordination of technical and research projects.

  • Best practice benchmarking, review, gap analysis, and auditing of water and sanitation management systems and infrastructure.

  • Assessment and management of product quality risks across the water and waste cycle including qualitative and quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA).

  • Occupational workplace health and safety assessments for water-related exposures to microbial hazards such as gastrointestinal and opportunistic pathogens.

  • Certified training and competency assessment for WASH sector professionals.

  • Support with drinking water, wastewater, sludge, and recycled water quality management systems, including sanitary surveys, water and sanitation safety plans (WSP and SSP).

  • Optimisation of monitoring programs, including for drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, recycled water, sludge, and wastewater and environmental surveillance (WES)/wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE).

  • Independent evidence-based process performance assessment and validation.

  • Incident and emergency response planning and real-time decision-making.

  • Expert panel and expert witness services to support complex deliberations.
